Irrigation and livestock wells are usually larger and pump more water than household wells, so casing size, pump horsepower and electrical service drive the cost. Much of the Valley farms with Rio Grande irrigation-district water; a well is often a backup or a supply for land without district water. Because groundwater in parts of the Lower Valley is salty, ask the driller what water quality nearby wells produce before you invest — some water is fine for livestock but not for crops.
